La Salle College

La Salle College is a in Hong Kong. It was established by the , a Roman Catholic religious-teaching order founded by St. John Baptist De La Salle.

La Salle College is one of the 114 schools in Hong Kong which bear the "EMI" name. The school curriculum uses English as medium of instruction in all subjects with the exception of Chinese-related subjects and French.

History

Foundation

In 1917 the , who had founded in 1875, opened a junior school on Chatham Road near the Rosary Church. At this time Kowloon was expanding rapidly, demand for school places was rising and Brother Aimar Sauron, the Director of St. Joseph's, realized that a new school building was necessary. He acquired a large plot near Prince Edward Road as a site for the new La Salle College. The site was immediately north of the city boundary, thus was technically in New Kowloon. That section of Boundary Street was not yet a formal road when the school site was bought, and was only gazetted several years after the school opened.

On November 5 1930 Sir , the Governor of Hong Kong, laid the foundation stone of the new building. By December 3 1931, the work on the building and the playgrounds was sufficiently advanced to allow the opening of eight classes for 303 pupils, under the management of five Brothers from and four Assistant Masters from the Chatham Road School.

The formal inauguration took place on January 6 1932. Seven Brothers, headed by Brother Aimar as Director, took over and a few days later 40 boarders occupied their quarters to the west of the building. There were then 540 students in 14 classes. About one third of the students had a European connection.

World War II

After La Salle was finally built, its architectural beauty held people in astonishment. However, only after reopening the school for six years, La Salle College's schooling was once again affected when World War II struck Hong Kong in 1939. The British War Department immediately designated the campus as an concentration camp for German enemies. The camp was run for approximately six months, during that time the Brothers managed to run the school in AM and PM sessions in the College Annex across the road .

On 8th December 1941, the Japanese attacked Hong Kong, and the school building was taken over by the British Military once again, but this time as a Relief Hospital. As the attacks on Hong Kong went underway, the Japanese also demanded use of the school building. After the surrendering of Hong Kong on Christmas Day 1941, the Japanese took over the building, and in February 1942, the Brothers were expelled from the College. During the Japanese occupation, the College was believed to be used as a Military Hospital until August 1945. The school's operations was terminated until September 1946.

After the War

For seven years the College thrived under the guidance of Brother Aimar. The students achieved excellent results in the Matriculation Examinations, the were getting into shape, four tennis courts and a full-sized football pitch were built and the statue of St. John Baptist de La Salle that now stands in front of the College was erected. The number of students increased to 805 in 1935 and 1,060 in 1939.

A new Beginning

Post-war development

Brother Felix was appointed Director of the School in 1956 and re-acquired the College buildings from the military authorities on August 1 1959. Student numbers grew steadily and this in turn led to a separation of primary and secondary divisions. La Salle Primary School was founded in 1957 and Brother Henry Pang was appointed Headmaster.

Towards the mid-1970s, the Brothers, under the directorship of Brother Raphael, decided the then aging building was functionally inadequate and would be too costly to refurbish. The old building with its distinctive Majestic Dome was knocked down to make way for progress. While classes were continuing, a portion of the school grounds were used to erect a new superstructure with modern facilities. The project was funded via the sale of part of the school grounds to various property corporations; therefore, the current College is notably smaller than that of the days of the Majestic Dome. The Governor of Hong Kong, , officially opened the new school on February 19 1982, in her Golden Jubilee year.

The current College building stands seven floors high from the "field level" and has an enrollment of almost 1,800 students. Its four blocks surround two s, the lower dotted with benches and greenery and the upper containing a basketball court. The four blocks are named the North, East, South and West Wings after their position on the two quadrangles. There is an extensive range of facilities for academic use and for extracurricular activities, including sporting facilities. The new campus incorporates a standard size football field with artificial turf, a 400 m all-weather track , a 50 m outdoor swimming pool with electronic timing and an air-conditioned gymnasium encompassing 6 badminton courts and a basketball court. In addition, there are two outdoor basketball courts, a tennis court, a volleyball court, and a .

Recent years

To enhance communication between teachers and parents, a Parent-Teacher Association was established in January 1995 and has become an integral part of the life of the school.

In September 1996, the were in urgent need of resurfacing. The La Salle Foundation, with the help of the PTA, raised over five million Hong Kong dollars and the Hong Kong Jockey Club contributed the same amount. The project was completed in October 1998 and the facilities were renamed the La Salle College-Jockey Club Track and Field.

In December 1998, La Salle College hosted the 3rd gathering of the Asia-Pacific Lasallian Educators' Congress; about 130 delegates from the Asia-Pacific region took part. As a direct result, the Hong Kong Office was established in April 1999 with Brother Thomas Lavin as Coordinator. This Office aims to draw together the various members of the Lasallian Family in Hong Kong.

In December 2004 more than 150 Brothers and young Lasallians joined together in Hong Kong for the Seventh Asia-Pacific Lasallian Youth Congress, chaired by Brother Thomas Lavin, under the theme "Together in Faith-Full Service".

During the summer of 2005, the construction work of the School Improvement Program ended with the completion of two new wings, the Aimar Wing and the Cassian Wing, named after the first two principals of the school. The SIP provides an additional 32 rooms, with new facilities including computer rooms and a multi-media learning centre.

Admission

72% of La Salle College's total Form 1 intake is from its feeder school, La Salle Primary School, with 28% from other primary schools. Applicants would attend interviews in English which are conducted by the Supervisor and the Principal. Other criteria include applicants' performance in extracurricular activities, awards and certificates and academic excellence. In addition, La Salle College applicants may apply for as an alternative to Chinese.

School associations

The Old Boys' Association is an organization that unifies old boys around the world, as well as contributing to the College by, for example, sponsoring scholarships, organizing career talks and supporting various school's events; its membership as of 7 June, 2006 reached 5,367.

The Student Association represents current students, and its Executive Committee is chosen through elections open to students of Form 2 and higher every year. It consists of five boards, namely the Clubs Coordinating Board , the Discipline Board , the Class Representatives' Board , the Publications Board , and the Secretariat .

Since the majority of the school buildings are above their standards, the Government is not responsible for the school's maintenance. Replacements of plant and machinery as well as the upkeeping of existing facilities require substantial sums of money. The Brothers, Principal Brother Francis, and some old boys initiated the idea of a Foundation whose sole aim was to provide sufficient funds to do just this. In early 1992, the La Salle Foundation was established with Mr. Michael Sze as the first Chairman.

Layman principals

As Hong Kong education law requires school principals to retire at 60 years of age, Brother Thomas Lavin relinquished the position in 2004, and later flew to Bethlehem for ministerial works in 2005. Dr. Paul Lau then became the first secular principal of La Salle College. Lau had completed his and secondary education at La Salle Primary School and La Salle College in recent years.

Lau resigned in 2006 with effect from August 31 2006, citing personal reasons, and was succeeded by Mr. Wong Yen-Kit as Acting Principal. Shortly after, Brother Thomas Lavin, the School Supervisor, announced that Mr. Wong Yen-Kit would take up the position of the Principal with immediate effect.

Achievements

Academic

Required by Hong Kong law, schools must have two examinations every year: Mid Year and Final Examination. In between the two examinations, students are provided feedback on their performance through continuous assessment, which accounts for 20% of the total subject mark.

In the 1992-1993 academic year, the school produced the first ever Arts 10A in HKCEE history. The event was reported in .

In 2001, four students of the school attained the top score of 10 A's in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination . Two years later, the class of 2003 scored a record total of 501 A's in this examination. La Salle students have also won scholarships.

Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination 2007 was the first ever Certificate Exam implementing the new Chinese and English grading system. In the year's exam, La Salle College had 3 of the 10 students in Hong Kong scoring 8As and two 5*s , while there were only 10 such students in Hong Kong that year.

In 2008, La Salle College had 4 of its students having the result of 8As and 2 5*s. It is the best result in Hong Kong, with the second highest school having only 2 of its students getting the same result. La Salle College also had 3 students scoring 7As and 2 5*s / 8As and 1 5* and the same number for students scoring 6As and 2 5*s / 7As and 1 5* .

Extra-curricular

La Salle College has over 50 clubs and societies which combined, with overlaps, consist of every member of the school. Clubs are divided into academic, cultural, interest, service and sports groups. In addition, joining clubs is mandatory.

The College has won academic, cultural and sports competitions. They also have a Champion record of the Joint School Chinese Debating Competition and a School Grand Prize Winner of the Hong Kong Olympiad in Informatics. The College's students are active in speech, dance and music competitions.

In sports, La Salle College has conquered badminton champions in all grades in 1993-1994, 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 in the Kowloon Area. In addition, La Salle has won champions in , badminton, basketball, , fencing, football, hockey, , softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. Table tennis team has been named the Overall Champions 7 years in a row during 2001-2007.

The Omega Rose Bowl, and its successor the Bauhinia Bowl, is awarded to the secondary school with the best all-round sporting performance in the Hong Kong Island and Kowloon region. La Salle College has been the Boys School Champions 26 times.

Currently, La Salle College is one of the best schools in Hong Kong in terms of sport and academics.

School Spirit

The Interschool Athletics Meet takes place every year in March. It is not only an external sports event, but also an opportunity for all La Salle students to show their Lasallian spirit.
Most of the top schools take part in this event and ever since the commencement, La Salle and Diocesan Boys' School have been competing to run for championship in the competition. In the academic year of 2007-2008, Diocesan Boys' School was the champion while La Salle came first runner-up, after receiving the Bauhinia Bowl for 8 consecutive years. La Salle College also holds the record of receiving the Rose Bowl, predecessor of the Bauhinia Bowl, for the longest period of 17 years between 1974 and 1991.

Prayers

Classes maintain the tradition of praying before almost every class . The prayers are usually led by students on duty, Catholic boys or sometimes the teacher, and commonly include Hail Mary and The Lord's Prayer which end with the unique Lasallian lines: "St. John Baptist de La Salle - Pray for us; Live Jesus in our hearts - Forever".

Ying Wa College

Ying Wa College, formerly known as Anglo-Chinese College, is the world's first Anglo- school. It has thrived on the vision of its founding fathers and the good work of generations of devoted principals and teachers, whose educational approach is particularly apt for Hong Kong, a place where East meets West, and where a healthy synergy between the two brings out the best of both worlds. Indeed, thousands of local youths have passed through its gates and benefited from its excellent care and nurture in over 185 years. Among them many are outstanding leaders in Hong Kong today.

The current school building is located at 1 Ying Wa Street in Shamshuipo of Kowloon in Hong Kong. It was formerly a school of London Missionary Society and later became a member school of The Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China.

History

The first institution with the name of Ying Wa College was founded in Malacca in 1818 by of the London Missionary Society, the first Protestant missionary to China. The Rev. Dr. William Milne was then appointed Headmaster. The fundamental deed declared the object of the College to be ''The reciprocal cultivation of Chinese and European literature; and the diffusion of Christianity''. Apart from its work of a school, the Anglo-Chinese College also trained evangelists and pastors. Leung Faat and the Rev. Hoh Fuk Tong were among the first Chinese to heed the call to preach the Gospel.

The college was part of an even broader scheme by Morrison for the evangelization of China. This was, to build at Malacca what he called an " Anglo-Chinese College." It’s object was to introduce the East to the West, and the West to the East ; in other words, to mediate between the two civilizations, and thus to prepare the way for the quiet and peaceful dissemination of Christian thought in China. The idea fired him with enthusiasm. He wrote home, urging the friends of China to take it up. Here, he said in effect, is a language which is the speech of something like one-third of all our species. Tens of thousands of English boys and girls are educated to know dead languages. Surely some may be found to learn this living one, and hence be enabled to make known the Christian faith to the many lands where Chinese is spoken. The college was to be open to all Chinese students of European literature, and European students of Chinese. Our missionaries, as they came out to the field, would learn in the college the language in which they were to preach.

The proposal was warmly taken up. The London Missionary Society gave the ground. The Governor of Malacca and many residents subscribed. Morrison himself gave ?1000 out of his small property to establish the college. The building was erected and opened. Printing presses were set up, and students were enrolled. Milne was the president ; and while no student was compelled to declare himself a Christian, or to attend Christian worship, it was hoped that the strong Christian influence would lead many of the purely literary students to become teachers of Christianity. Intense as were his Christian convictions, he could sanction nothing that would do deliberate violence to the convictions of another ; and he had a faith that Christian truth would eventually prevail on its own merits, and need never fear to be set side by side with the truths that other religious systems contain. Eight or nine years after its foundation, Mr. Charles Majoribanks, M.P. for Perth, in a Government report on the condition of Malacca, singled out this institution for very high praise on account of its thoroughly sound, quiet, and efficient work.

A settlement having now been established, under British protection, and in the midst of those islands which are inhabited by a large Malay and Chinese population, reinforcements were sent out from England. After a period in Malacca they were sent on from there to various centers: Penang, Java, Singapore, Amboyna, wherever they could find a footing and establish relations with the people. In this way many new stations sprang up in the Ultra-Ganges Mission. A magazine was issued, entitled The Gleaner, the object of which was to keep the various stations in touch with one another, and disseminate information as to progress in the different parts. The various printing presses poured forth pamphlets, tracts, catechisms, translations of Gospels, in Malay or in Chinese. Schools were founded for the teaching of the children : for the great obstacle to the free use of the printing press was that so few of the people comparatively could read. The missionaries had to be many-sided, now preaching to the Malays, now to the Chinese, now to the English population ; now setting up types, now teaching in the schools ; now evangelizing new districts and neighboring islands, now gathering together their little congregations at their own settlement. The reports do not greatly vary from year to year. The work was hard, and seemingly unproductive. The people listened, but often did not respond. The converts were few.

After Hong Kong was ceded by China to under the Treaty of Nanking, the College was moved to Hong Kong Island in 1843 by the Rev. James Legge, the famous translator of the . The school building was situated at the junction of Hollywood Road and Staunton Street. At a time when the Christian church had yet to be officially established, the College was used as a religious centre where Christians assembled to worship the Lord. An important activity of the school was printing the Old and the New Testaments with its own printing press. Rev. James Legge continued to be Principal until he was appointed by the Government in 1864 to help prepare for the opening of . For lack of a successor, the Anglo-Chinese College ceased to operate.

In 1911 the elders of the To Tsai Church and the Revs. Cheung Chuk Ling, W. T. Pearce, and H. R. Wells revived the college so that the training of the sons of church members might be carried on. In 1913 the London Missionary Society responded to the appeal of the To Tsai Church to provide a Headmaster for the project, sending Arnold Hughes to Hong Kong, and the college was re-opened as a middle school in 1914 in rented premises, first at 9 Caine Road, later at 45 Caine Road, and finally at 80 Bonham Road .

The school grappled with many financial problems and it was at this time that help was received from the China Congregational Church and the School Committee was enlarged to accept representatives from its new friend. Financial assistance was also received from the Government.

In 1917 Hughes was called up for service in the First World War and the Rev. W. T. Pearce became Acting Headmaster until Hughes returned at the end of the war. The school suffered a great loss in 1922 when Hughes became ill, and died in Japan while on his way back to England on sick leave. In that year the London Missionary Society transferred the Rev. L. G. Phillips from Xia-men to Hong Kong and he served as Headmaster for over two years.

With Phillips's departure in 1924, and troubles in connection with the premises at 80 Bonham Road, the school entered another difficult period. The premises were rented from the government who now wanted to auction them off. The school committee asked to be allowed to buy the property and there arose a dispute with the Rhenish Mission even though the rental had originally been undertaken with a view to protecting the property and preserving it for the German mission. The committee contemplated closing the school, but eventually the dispute was resolve and the school continued under the guidance of Shum Wai Cheung.

Expansion period

In 1927, the school decided to build its own premises. Shum succeeded in raising over six thousand dollars from the staff and students. Together with fourteen thousand dollars from the Provident Fund and a government subvention of twenty thousand dollars, the school committee decided to construct the new school building on the site of Mongkok Church at Bute Street in Mongkok with the understanding that the school was to share its new hall with Mongkok Church. The government withdrew its financial aid when construction work was underway and the school was completed in September, 1928 with the aid of some loans.

In 1930 Shum resigned and the London Missionary Society agreed to urgent appeals from the school committee that the Rev. Frank Short should be allowed to serve the school as Headmaster. Short administered and developed the school so well that it was restored to the Grant List and the extra funds thus gained made improvement installing possible. The Rev. Frank Short continued in office until 1938 when he had to devote more time to administrative work for the London Missionary Society. Herbert Noble who joined the school in 1933, succeeded Short.

The school building, commandeered by the Japanese authorities during in World War II, was used as a P. W. D. depot. The Headmaster, a member of the naval volunteers, was taken prisoner of war and the staff became scattered. At the close of the war the building was restored to the school committee and re-opened in November, 1945. Noble convalesced in London and was substituted by the senior master K. Y. Yung. When Noble resumed duty in 1946 the enrollment had increased to such an extent that almost 600 students were crowded into a building originally designed for 350. The College premises in Bute Street, Mongkok proved to be too small to operate an ideal school. A project for building a new school was therefore contemplated and negotiations resulted in the selling of the existing land and building to the friends of the Mongkok Church.

With a plot of land granted by the Government as the college site, the school authority started to erect a new building at Oxford Road in Kowloon Tong. The construction work suffered repeated setbacks concerning its location, foundation and plan. It was only through the zealous efforts of Noble, who exhausted himself, and the magnanimity of the public, who made generous donations, that the project became a reality in June 1962. In the same year Daniel P. K. Au officiated at the foundation ceremony. The new school was opened by the Governor of Hong Kong, , in October 1963.

Development period

After serving the College for 30 years, Noble retired in 1964 on account of his poor health. He was remembered for his dedicated service and remarkable contributions which helped enhance the prestige of the school. He returned to England soon after retirement and died in December 1964. Terence Iles who succeeded Herbert Noble as Headmaster was most active in organising various extracurricular activities with a view to developing students' all-roundedness.

After 8 years of service, Iles resigned in 1972 and was succeeded by Rex King who devoted his life and energy to the good of the school. In addition to improving the school facilities, he also attended to pupils' application, which resulted in marked progress in academic work.

In 1978, King resigned and was replaced by H. B. Mui . After 12 years of service, Mui resigned in 1990 and was succeeded by P. K. Yeung. The college continued to expand, with classes extended to 31, the school curriculum constantly revised to tailor for students' needs and various innovations made. Being inheritor of a long and glorious tradition, the school will continue to follow the footsteps of its predecessors in carrying out its weighty mission.

Wa Ying College

Wa Ying College is a secondary school in Homantin, Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is managed by the Chinese Methodist Church.

History

It was founded as Wa Ying Middle School by the Methodist Church in 1913 in Foshan of Guangdong in China. The school quickly established itself as one of the three most prestigious middle schools in pre-World War II southern China. During the War the school relocated to Hong Kong in Tung Chung Fort of Tung Chung on Lantau Island and later moved to Shatin. It returned to Foshan after the war. In 1951, after the Communist Party of China came into power in mainland China, the Foshan-based Wa Ying Middle School was confiscated by the state as the People's Republic of China's atheist Communist ideology does not allow religious organizations-run schools to operate. The Foshan No.1 Middle School , was formed after the authorities merged the former Wa Ying Middle School with the public run Foshan Middle School and sited at the former Wa Ying Middle School.

In 1969, alumni of Wa Ying Middle School based in Hong Kong handed a proposal to the Chinese Methodist Church to re-establish the school in Hong Kong, then outside the People's Republic of China's control. The alumni pledged to raise funds to start the building project and entrusted the school to the church as in the past. With less than 400 alumni, nearly $300,000 was raised. In addition to a loan of $250,000 and a subsidy of two million dollars granted from the Hong Kong Government, the dream to resume the school came true. Construction work began at its present site in 1970.

In September 1971, the new school, now named Wa Ying College in English while keeping the Chinese name of its Foshan predecessor, started with 18 teachers and 12 classes. The school gradually expanded up to 31 classes by the 1983-84 academic year. The school campus has undergone a number of renovations over the years, with the most recent being at the late 2005.

Reputations and Achievements

Wa Ying College is considered a school with an excellent reputation both district-wide and territory-wide. All Form 1 student intakes are band 1 primary school graduates and competition for a place at Wa Ying is highly intense, the admittance ratio for the year 2007-2008 is 14:1. A majority of its Form 7 graduates are admitted to universities in Hong Kong every year.

The school's policies are also known to be highly progressive. Since its re-founding in Hong Kong in 1971, all teachers have been involved in the school's administrative work and the making of school policies through the system of functional committees. The school also pioneered school counseling practices in Hong Kong by introducing social workers into the school and setting up peer counseling schemes . Most of the student welfare affairs have been managed by the democratically-elected Student Union since 1992. Hong Kong Local History and Liberal Studies were also introduced into the school curriculum long before they became fashionable in Hong Kong education. In the upcoming introduction of new Senior Secondary Curriculum, Wa Ying College is one of the pioneer schools that offers Design and Applied Technology as a technology-based elective, while most other schools offer the more common electives such as Finance and Information Technology related subjects at the initial stage.

The school's teachers and students enjoy a very close-knit relationship together and there is a well known saying of "Once a Wa Ying member, forever you remain a Wa Ying member" among Wa Ying's students and alumni.
